The madness and misery of the pants

Rishabh Pant has recorded three 50+ scores in his last five test heats: 91, 89 *, 23, 97 and 36. Pant has now registered three scores of over 90 points in India while not crossing the 100 point mark (92, 92 and 91). The pants recorded four 90+ scores, the joined-second-most by a wicket keeper in the test history. MS Dhoni leads the list with five of these cases.

Ash Marathon

Ravichandran Ashwin played up to 55.1 overs in the opening innings – most played by him in a test round. Their previous record was 53.0 against Australia in Adelaide, 2011/12. Ashwin too became the fifth bowler and the third from India to complete 300 test wickets in Asia. He is now behind Muttiah Muralitharan (612), Anil Kumble (419) and Rangana Herath (354). Ashwin with 300 tied Harbhajan Singh on the list.

England punishes India on the pitch

England played up to 190.1 overs to score 578 in the opening innings It’s the India’s longest first trial cricket heats (overs) since 2004/05 when South Africa beat 190.4 overs against India (Kanpur). England are the fourth team to beat more than 190 overs in India since 2000.

After a third consecutive day of dominating England, India is in dire straits facing the visitor in a performance contrasting with its Gabba heist 20 days ago.

After England jeopardized India’s first pair early in a fire spell from Jofra Archer, India’s top batsmen Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane succumbed to interruptions from Dom Bess in a display rather poor against the effects.

How much does India need to avoid a follow-up against England in the 1st Chennai Test?

Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant have survived long enough to salvage a few imperfections as the duo’s 119-year partnership has put India in good stead. But it was Dom Bess’s day to deploy to Chennai as he smashed Pujara and menacing pants early enough as India leaned further on Day 3.

With the local boys, Sundar and Ashwin in the middle, India is fighting to avoid a follow-up which is still a difficult 121 meters.
